Triplet opals are very popular as they display brilliant colour at
only a fraction of what a solid gem opal would cost.
A triplet opal has three components. A thin slice of crystal opal
and a backing with can be black potch or manmade black resin.
The opal is glued on and the black backing greatly enhances the
fire colour. A quartz or glass top is glued to top of the opal to protect
it. Many triplet have stunning fire colours and patterns.
