Mordialloc Sailing Club Firebug Boat Building Project details

In February this year, Mordialloc Sailing Club ran it’s very first ‘Tackers’ Sail Training Program – 14 children aged 6-14 completed the Yachting Victoria sail training (like Auskick for sailors) in brand new International Optimist Dinghies.

One of the parents, Richard Lozell, originally from New Zealand, likes building boats in his spare time and he has now volunteered to help six families build their own Firebug Sailing Dinghy.

They are a great entry level boat for new sailors and a fantastic boat to pack up and take on family camping holidays.  They can fit on top of a 6x4 trailer or a car roof rack and can carry up to 100 kilograms on the water (so ideal for bigger kids on their own or a parent and a small child).  In a mixed sailing fleet, they can outperform a Minnow, Sabot or an Optimist.

Richard has already started creating YouTube videos on how to build the boats on a new website http://www.getintosailing.com and there are only four spots left if you would like to build your own boat before Christmas.

The Mordialloc Sailing Club Firebugs Boat Building Program http://www.getintosailing.com/boat-building-program/ will run over nine Sunday afternoons from 11 October 2009 – 13 December 2009 (12:30pm – 4:30pm).  We are still looking for a venue close to Mordialloc Sailing Club (so if you know anyone who has garage space of 5 metres by 7 metres please contact Richard)  If a venue close to the club cannot be found, we will be building them in Richard’s garage in Frankston.

This is a fantastic new project that is so familiar to many old time Mordialloc residents.  The boats are very easy to build (with one or two adults and supervised children) and the total cost will be less than $1800 (to build a brand new boat).  Richard is more than happy to return your call and chat in more detail if you have some questions you would like to ask.  Your boat can be personally detailed – any paint colour, name and a variety of sail colours too!

Read more information at http://www.getintosailing.com/boat-building-program/terms-and-conditions/

If you would like to participate, you will need to contact Richard before 9 September 2009 and pay the first instalment of $600 to Mordialloc Sailing Club.
